Guest Star (2018) overlaps two disparate elements of scientific thinking and superstitions; one is the cosmic phenomenon of supernova, the explosion caused by death of a star; and the other is the perception of misunderstanding or overinterpretation that takes place in multilateral relationships.

An interesting phrase appears in the work: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

This sentence contains all 26 letters of the English alphabet so it is often used to test typewriters or computer keyboards This ordinary line was also the first message sent by the US to the Soviet Union on the day of launching their joint hotline in 1963 to minimize

misunderstandings and prevent an accidental war. The Soviet Union reportedly hired

cryptographers to identify possible military messages behind this cryptic phrase. There was a similar anecdote at the inter-Korean summit held in Panmunjom April 2018. The two Korean leaders’ friendly conversation on a foot bridge televised without sound surprised the world. Even a lip- reading expert tried to decipher the conversation.

The artist sheds light on how strong human desire to explore unknown subjects is. Like the mystery of the far-off supernova through which scientists try to reach the origin of the universe, she suggests that the existence of North Korea is an uncharted area that

can only be reached in a very limited way just like the universe.

〈객성〉(2018) 은 두 이질적 요소를 중첩시킨다. 하나는 우리 눈에 새로운 별의 탄생처럼 보이지만 사실 별의 죽음에서 비롯한 대폭발을 지칭하는 우주과학적 현상 ‘초신성’이고, 다른 하나는 다자간의 관계에서 발생하는 오해나 과잉 해석이라는 인식 현상이다. 이 작품은 확장과 수축을 반복하는 거대한 초신성의 파장, 그리고 정확한 의미를 알 수 없는 문장의 발화와 신체의 움직임을 반복해서 교차시킨다. 영상에 등장하는 흥미로운 문장 “날쌘 갈색 여우가 게으른 개를 뛰어넘는다(The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog)”는 영어문화권 출신자에게는 익숙하지만 우리에게는 다소 생소하다. 이 표현은 26개의 영어 알파벳 전체를 한 문장 안에 포함하고

있기 때문에 과거 타자기나 현재 컴퓨터 키보드의 성능을 점검할 때 혹은 새로운 글씨체를 설치할 때 자주 쓰이는 별 의미 없는 문장이다. 이 평범한 문장은, 미국과 소련이 서로간의 오해를 최소화해 우발적인 전쟁을 방지하고자 1963년 핫 라인을 개통한 날 미국이 소련에게 보냈던 메시지의 첫 문장이기도 하다. 이 문장 뒤로 이어지는 아리송한 문구에 당황한 소련은 그 이면에 숨겨져 있을지 모르는 정치적, 군사적 메시지를 확인하기 위해 암호 해독가들을 기용했다고 전해진다. 2018년 4월 27일 판문점 평화의집에서 개최된 남북정상회담에서도 비슷한 일화가 있었다. 음소거된 채 방송된 남북 정상의 보도다리 회담은 연일 화제였으며, 독순술 전문가까지 나서서 그 대화 내용을 유추하고자 애썼다. 이를 통해 작가는 미지의 대상을 탐구하려는 인간의 욕망이 얼마나 강한지 조명한다. 우주의 근원을 파헤치려는 갈 망으로 어떻게든 닿아 보려는 저 멀리 초신성이라는 미궁처럼, 작가는 한국인에게 북한이라는 존재 자체가 우주처럼 극히 제한된 경로로만 접근할 수 있는 미지의 영역이라고 암시한다. 초신성, 그리고 두 적대적 관계 사이에 흐르는 핫라인 상의 목소리 및 제스처가 포개지면서, 알지 못하는 대상에 대한 공포에서 비롯한 오해와 과잉 해석을 대치 상황에서의 소통 불가능성으로 은유한다.

임영주는 영상, 회화, 설치, 출판 등 다양한 방식으로 미신과 같은 초현실적 혹은 인간의 믿음과 결탁된 종교적 경험을 언어,미디어, 자연 과학의 여러 징후들과 연결시킨 작업을 해왔다. 종교와 미신과 같은 정신적인 영역을 역설적이게도 과학적 사고 방식과 대비 시킴으로써 작가는 이 둘 간의 차이보다는 유사성에 주목한다. 따라서 그의 작업에는 초자연적 요소와 이를 자의적으로해석, 전유, 차용, 은유하는 (유사) 과학적 이미지 혹은 방법론이 동시에 등장한다.

Youngzoo IM primarily works with video, along with painting, installation, and publishing to examine absurd beliefs and their underlying structures. IM’s focus lies on the similarities, rather than differences, of scientific thinking with superstitions and religions that cannot be compatible by logic of the modern world. She interprets, borrows, and appropriates supernatural elements to create (quasi-) scientific images in her own way.
