Aurora Reflection starts with the color green of the green screen, a background that is used to edit images in the video editing software. The work deliberately discloses an editing technique that makes fake images look real, reflecting the artist’s interest in cultural belifs and their underlying structure.

The first scene anticipates the entire clip in which the Chotdae Bawi images from AEDONG gets broken into pixels, and green lines (signifying the aurora) prominently appear between images. Here, the roles of main images and the green screen have been reversed; green areas which main images are supposed to sit on and thus stay invisible stand out far greater than main images. Highlight of the work is when two clips that appear as if they are in the same color but actually slightly different from one another go through screen adjustment and get perfectly combined into a single image. Images and sounds are out of sync in the two videos; the shape of a circle gets slightly broken when it passes through the central border, while making dissonant sounds as if two notes are played at once. The viewers would burst out laughing when the two clips finally come in as one single video to show the universe. It is IM’s wonderful talent that combine humour and seriousness in such a brilliant way. Failed editing is not encouraged normally, however, the artist emphasizes it to ridicule and unmask the process of image-making/editing, questioning the structure behind it.

<극광반사>는 이미지 합성에 쓰이는 그린 스크린의 녹색에서 출발한다. 이 작업은 가짜를 진짜처럼 보이게 하는 편집 기법을 노출하는데, 이는 믿음을 만드는 효과에 대한 관심을 영상 기법에 적용한 경우로 볼 수 있다.

<애동>의 촛대바위 이미지들이 깨지면서 이미지와 이미지 사이에 초록색(오로라) 선이 생기는 첫 장면은 영상 전체의 의미를 상징적으로 재현한다. 실제처럼 보이기 위해 최대한 노출하지 않아야 하는 형상의 이음매가 여기서는 주인공이 되어버린다. 하나의 색으로 보이나 실제로는 미묘하게 다른 2채널 영상이 화면 조정을 거쳐 하나로 맞아떨어지는 또 다른 장면은 이 작업의 백미다. 여기서 두 채널의 이미지와 사운드는 모두 시차를 지닌다. 이미지는 원이 두 채널의 경계를 지날 때 단차를 내며 갈라지고, 사운드의 경우 두 음을 한꺼번에 눌렀을 때처럼 불일치가 발생한다. 이미지와 사운드가 완벽히 동기화되는 순간 영상이 우주로 진입하는 장면은 폭소를 자아내는데, 이러한 깨알 같은 편집은 디테일에 강하며 유머를 진지함과 뒤섞는 작가 특유의 면모기도 하다. 일반적으로 금기시되는 실패한 편집은 여기서 눈속임을 주는 과정을 드러내며 이미지에 신뢰성을 가하는 기제에 대해 생각하게 이끈다.

임영주는 영상, 회화, 설치, 출판 등 다양한 방식으로 미신과 같은 초현실적 혹은 인간의 믿음과 결탁된 종교적 경험을 언어,미디어, 자연 과학의 여러 징후들과 연결시킨 작업을 해왔다. 종교와 미신과 같은 정신적인 영역을 역설적이게도 과학적 사고 방식과 대비 시킴으로써 작가는 이 둘 간의 차이보다는 유사성에 주목한다. 따라서 그의 작업에는 초자연적 요소와 이를 자의적으로해석, 전유, 차용, 은유하는 (유사) 과학적 이미지 혹은 방법론이 동시에 등장한다.

Youngzoo IM primarily works with video, along with painting, installation, and publishing to examine absurd beliefs and their underlying structures. IM’s focus lies on the similarities, rather than differences, of scientific thinking with superstitions and religions that cannot be compatible by logic of the modern world. She interprets, borrows, and appropriates supernatural elements to create (quasi-) scientific images in her own way.
