Description

Images from an unknown landscape are subjected to the roving eye of artist, Seoungho Cho. Details from bodies of water and bits of the accompanying landscape are seen through a narrowed view. A travelogue glimpsed through a peephole. A crack in the earth. Fluid motion broken up by small impositions.

As with many of Cho’s works, there is great attention to the smallest of details. Light and shadow, the rhythmic patterns and visual transformations of a shallow stream move in and out of the foreground. Each element pulses as if figures in a dance. The soundtrack underlies the fragmentation of the landscape. A classical guitar stops and starts, finding cues for structure and melody in the moving stream.

Various visual devices are used to cut into the ladscape. An orange line floats along, dividing our view. A rotary telephone floats just below the surface. The title, Section/Intersection 1 might speak to our impulse to cut into the land. It could also be read in terms of aspects of an individual’s identity and factors that shape who we are, and perhaps where we are going.

미지의 풍경 이미지들이 예술가 조승호의 방랑하는 시선을 사로잡는다. 좁은 시야를 통해 수역과 수반되는 풍경의 세부 사항을 볼 수 있다. 작은 구멍을 통해 흘깃 보는 여행기. 지구의 균열. 유체 운동이 작은 부담에 갈라져 나갔다.

조 감독의 많은 작품들과 마찬가지로, 가장 작은 디테일에 큰 관심이 쏠린다. 빛과 그림자, 얕은 시냇물의 리드미컬한 패턴과 시각적 변형이 전경 안팎으로 움직인다. 각 요소는 마치 춤추는 인물처럼 고동친다. 사운드 트랙은 풍경의 분절을 강조한다. 클래식 기타가 멈추고 시작하며 움직이는 흐름에서 구조와 멜로디의 단서를 찾는다.

다양한 시각 장치가 풍경에 끼어들곤 한다.. 주황색 선이 홀로 떠 다니며 우리의 시선을 나눈다. 회전식 전화기가 수면 바로 아래에 떠 있다. 섹션/교차로 1이라는 제목은 대지에 끼어들고픈 우리의 충동을 말해준다. 그것은 또한 개인의 정체성과 우리가 누구인지, 그리고 아마도 우리가 어디로 가고 있는지를 형성하는 요인이라는 측면으로 읽을 수도 있다.

Bio

Seoungho Cho was born in 1959 in Pusan, South Korea. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Graphic Arts from Hong-Ik University, Korea, and an M.A. in video art from New York University. In 1998 he received a Rockefeller Foundation Media Arts Fellowship and in 2003 he received a Jerome Foundation grant. He received the Grand Prize at the 27th Annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival as well as the International Award for Video Art from ZKM.

조승호는 1959년 대한민국 부산에서 태어났다. 한국 홍익대학교에서 그래픽 아트 학사 및 석사 학위를, 뉴욕 대학교에서 비디오 아트 석사 학위를 받았다. 1998년에는 록펠러 재단 미디어 아트 펠로우십을 받았고 2003년에는 제롬 재단 보조금을 받았다. 그는 제 27 회 연례 블랙 마리아 영화 및 비디오 페스티벌에서 대상과 ZKM의 비디오 아트 국제 상을 수상했다.
