오록스는 현대 소의 야생 조상에게 붙여진 이름이다. 오록스는 최초로 문서화된 멸종 사례라는 특징을 가지고 있다. 마지막으로 알려진 야생 오록스는 1627년 폴란드의 야코로프 숲에서 죽었다. 사냥과 가축의 도입으로 인해 개체수가 감소하고 사라진 것이다. 20세기에는 멸종된 오록스를 되살리려는 노력이 구체화되기 시작했다.
