크렌은 첫 영화를 제작할 당시 부터 체계적으로 자신의 필모그래피를 유지해왔다. 연속되는 숫자와 제작년도가 자신의 작품의 제목이되었다. 1/57은 1957년에 만든 그의 첫 번째 영화다. 테스트라는 말은 필름 물질과 눈에 제안하는 참을성 있는 시도의 하나로, 이 작품의 출발점에 서 있는 단어다. 

영화는 벽과 선인장의 팬과 같은 이미지들로 최소한의 내용만 다룬다. 엄격하고 시적인 몽타주 배열을 통해 연대기적으로 구성해 크렌은 이러한 모티브들을 상상의 영역으로 넘기지 않고, 그 자체가 가지고 있는 “표피성”에 남겨둔다. 영화의 사운드는 물질에 직접적으로 각인되어 이미지가 사운드 영역에 머물러 소리를 내는 원칙에 조응하며, 오직 긁히거나 딱딱하는 소음들만이 변형되지 않은 원음과 소음 공간 속에 드러난다. (마이클 팜)

The word test stands at the beginning of Kren´s Experiment with Synthetic Sound (Test), which is really a kind of endurance test which Kren poses to the film material and to the eye. The film makes do with a minimum content in its images (a wall, a pan of a cactus) and models chronologically by using a strict, stanzaic montage arrangement, which is supposed, not to push the primary extension of these motifs into the imaginary realm of images, but just to leave them in their own "superficiality." The sound, which is directly engraved onto the material, corresponds to this principle, in that it allows only crackling and scratching noises to be audible, exposes itself in unmodeled raw sound and noise spaces.
