자신들이 포함된 권력 구조에 대한 대안적 가능성을 찾는 세 영화작가들 사이에 세대를 넘나드는 연대에 관한 작품이다. 이 작품은 마야 데렌과 바바라 해머가 포기했던 작품 기획에서 출발하였다. 해머가 1975년에 가장 멀리까지 갔던 모터사이클 여행지 과테말라에서 촬영되었고, 1950년대 아이티에서의 실패, 조우, 그리고 시작에 대한 데렌의 성찰로 이어진다. 베베르는 신을 불러내기 위한 아이티 부두교 의식에서 사용되는 상징을 지칭한다. “어떤 것을 ‘정치적’이라고 부르면서 그것이 우리와는 분리된 것이라고 생각하는 것은 그것에 대해서 전혀 생각하지 않기 위한 핑계에 불과하다.” (비키 애스피널, The Raincoats의 멤버)
A cross generational binding of three filmmakers seeking alternative possibilities to power structures they’re inherently part of. The film grew out of abandoned film projects of Maya Deren and Barbara Hammer. Shot at the furthest point of a motorcycle trip Hammer took to Guatemala in 1975, and passed through with Deren’s reflections of failure, encounter and initiation in 1950s Haiti. A vever is a symbolic drawing used in Haitian Voodoo to invoke a Loa, or god.

데보라 스트라트만은 아티스트이자 영화작가로 풍경과 시스템에 관심을 갖고 있다. 그녀의 작품들 대부분은 실제 환경과 그 땅에서 벌어지는 인간의 권력 및 통제를 둘러싼 투쟁과의 관계를 지시한다. 최근 작품들은 자유, 팽창주의, 감시, 음향무기, 연설, 유령, 싱크홀, 공중 부양, 선전선동, 메뚜기, 맹금류, 혜성, 출애굽과 신앙 등의 주제를 다뤘다. 그녀의 작품들은 MoMA, 퐁피두센터 등의 미술관에서 전시되었으며, 선댄스, 비엔나 비에날레, 베를리날레, 토론토, 오버하우젠, 로테르담 등지의 페스티벌에서 상영되기도 했다. 현재 그녀는 일리노이 대학에서 교편을 잡고 있다.
Deborah Stratman is an artist and filmmaker interested in landscapes and systems. Much of her work points to the relationships between physical environments and human struggles for power and control that play out on the land. Recent projects have addressed freedom, expansionism, surveillance, sonic warfare, public speech, ghosts, sinkholes, levitation, propagation, orthoptera, raptors, comets, exodus and faith. She has exhibited internationally at venues including the MoMA (NY), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Hammer Museum (LA), Mercer Union (Toronto), Witte de With (Rotterdam), Tabakalera (San Sebastian), Film Museum (Vienna), Whitney Biennial (NY) and festivals including Sundance, Viennale, Berlinale, CPH/DOX, Toronto, Oberhausen, True/False, and Rotterdam. Stratman is the recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim and USA Collins Fellowships, an Alpert Award, Sundance Art of Nonfiction Award and grants from Creative Capital, Graham Foundation, and Wexner Center for the Arts. She lives in Chicago where she teaches at the University of Illinois / UIC.
