만화가 요지 쿠리, 삽화가 마나베 히로시, 디자이나 야나기하라 료헤이 세 사람에 의해 1960년 결성된 ‘애니메이션 3인의 회’는 시각예술분야 독립 작가들이 모여 작품 활동을 공유 할 수 있는 공간이자 기존의 방식과 다른 실험적 표현 양식을 탐구하고 대안을 제시했던, 일본 실험 애니메이션의 출발점으로 평가받는다. 이들의 실천은 현대음악가인 아쿠타가와 야스시, 단 이쿠마, 마유즈미 토시로와 같은 현대 음악가의 실천을 따라 당시 제한적인 장르로 인식되었던 소위 만화와 자신들을 구분 짓고 아방가드르 스타일과 현대음악을 결합해 애니메이션의 개념을 확장하고자 했다. 요지 쿠리의 1960년 작품 <우표의 환상>은 1960년 11월 26일 소게츠 아트 센터에서 열린 ‘애니메이션 3인의 회’ 첫 정기상영회때 발표된 작품이다. 우키요에 화가 스즈키 하루노부Harunobu Suzuki 의 우표가 콜라주 기법을 통해 생명을 부여받아 환상적인 이미지로 변이하는 이 작품은, 요지 쿠리가 현대 음악가 하야시 히카루Hikaru Hayashi의 음악을 듣고 음악에 대한 영감을 시각적으로 확장시킨다.
Along with graphic designer / ad-man Ryohei Yanagihara (柳原良平) and renowned book cover designer Hiroshi Manabe (真鍋博), Kuri formed the Animation Sannin no Kai (Animation Group of Three) in 1960. In doing so the three animators followed the footsteps of the 1950s Sannin no Kai composers (Yasushi Akutagawa, Ikuma Dan & Toshiro Mayuzumi) who banded together to stage performances of their avant-garde style of music. The Animation Group of Three showcased their work at three events: November 1960, December 1962, and April 1963. After 1964 this event expanded into a wider Animation Festival, that annually showcased the experimental fare of such artists as Taku Furukawa, Sadao Tsukioka, Goro Sugimoto, Keiichi Tanaami, and even Osamu Tezuka until 1971. Stamp Fantasy was introduced at the first Animation Group of Three screening on November 26, 1960 in the Sogetsu Art Center. Using various collage techniques, Kuri breathes life into stamps painted by Harunobu Suzuki that transform into fantastic images. These visuals were influenced by contemporary musician Hikairu Hayashi.
