비디오 퍼포먼스 ‹감정의 시대›는 감정노동이라는 개념을 통해서 감정의 사회성을 되짚어보고 신자유주의 시대 노동계급이 경험하는 화, 수치심, 당혹감, 우울, 무력감, 공포와 불안을 드러내고자 한다. 개인의 감정 표현을 억누르고 관리하고, 규칙화해서 이를 생산수단으로 삼아서 노동자들의 감정을 생산하는 감정노동은 관리된 감정을 판매하고 관리된 친밀성을 팔고 감정을 물화시킨다. 이 작업은 실제 9명의 감정노동자들의 인터뷰를 바탕으로 재구성된 역할극이다. 퍼포머들은 각자의 규율과 규제 안에서 적합한 의상과 몸짓 나아가 태도를 가지고 노동 수행을 몸의 언어로 표현한다.

As particular economies move from a manufacturing to a service- based economy, many more workers in a variety of occupational fields are expected to manage their emotions independent of their own mood or temperament at the time. This video performance presents the publicly visible facial and bodily displays of service workers and expresses these employees’ emotional exhaustion and burnout, job dissatisfaction, depression, fear, anxiety, etc. Actual interviews of nine exemplary professions that require emotional labor are carried out for the structure of this roleplay performance. The performers shift themselves to imitate the workers’ subordination regulated by their employers and reinforced through cultural symbols that originate from deeply rooted assumptions about service work.
