나는 어느 날 밤 중국 만화의 쥐가 그려진 재떨이를 물끄러미 바라보았고 그것이 가진 색과 어린아이 같은 순수함에서 작품을 시작할 용기를 냈다. 나는 자연과의 선천적 관계의 재발견을 통해 고향으로 돌아갈 방법을 찾을지도 모르는 우울하고 고립된 여성을 상상했다. 그래서 만화 쥐는 그녀를 새로운 인식의 여행으로 데려간다. 4년이 넘는 제작기간 동안, 24분 길이의 작품을 위해 난 멕시코의 호텔 방과 열대우림 그리고 미국에서 수천 여장의 애니메이션 셀을 그렸다. 과테말라와 멕시코의 열대우림에서 그림을 그린 나의 경험은 정글을 애니메이션화 할 수 있게 해주었다.

<조이 스트리트>에서는 변화하는 분위기와 장소를 표현하기 위해 다양한 "스타일"과 이미지를 담는 방법을 사용했다. 이 영화는 전 과정은 손으로 직접 그린 이미지로 만들었으며, 하버드 대학교의 옥스베리 35mm 카메라로 촬영했다. 사진, 채색한 필름, 컷아웃을 비롯한 많은 다른 애니메이션 형식을 이용한 이 영화는 다른 예술가들과 협업으로 완성되었다. 색소폰 연주자 로이 나단슨과 재즈 그룹인 재즈 패신저스, 싱어송라이터인 데비 해리, 벤 젤코위츠, 로라 크래닝, 베키 하이, 사운드 디자인은 픽사 스튜디오의 데이비드 슬러서 그리고 다른 많은 애니메이터와 화가 그리고 음악가들이 이 작품에 함께 했다.(수잔 피트)

I stared one night at the china cartoon mouse ashtray and I drew courage from its color and childlike purity. I imagined a depressed and isolated woman who might find a way out through the re-discovery of our innate relationship to nature, our primal home. And so the cartoon mouse takes her on a journey of renewed awareness. Over 4 years in the making and 24 minutes in length, I painted the thousands of animation cels in Mexico (in hotel rooms, in the rainforest) and the US. My experiences painting in the rainforest of Guatemala and Mexico informed the creation of the animation of the jungle. 

The use of various “styles” and ways of picturing were used to implement the changing atmospheres and locations animated in Joy Street. The film is entirely painted by hand and shot in 35mm on the Oxberry camera at Harvard University. Using photographs, paint on film, cut-outs and many other animation forms, the film was also a collaboration with other artists (Roy Nathanson and The Jazz Passengers with Debby Harry, Ben Zelkowitz, Laura Kraning, Becky High, sound design by David Slusser (PIXAR studios) and many other animators, painters, and musicians).
