탈진한 배달부는 길 옆 벤치에 앉아서 잠이 든다. 그의 꿈은 하나의 롱테이크 장면으로 구성되어 있는데, 사막 한 가운데 샨자이 공원에 노동자들이 모여 있는 곳에서 배달부는 동상으로 만들어져서 움직이지 못한다. 다방면에서 일하는 현대 노동자들의 모임은 중국의 경제적 기적의 이면을 보여 준다. 동질화된 도시 생활은 기술과 자본 뿐만 아니라 새로운 종류의 노동 및 사회적 착취와 결부되어 있다. 그것은 바로 휴식없이 계속해서 움직이는 속도와 노동이다. “24/7”에서 조너선 크래리는 현대 자본주의에서 수면이란 희소한 자원이라고 지적했다. 그리고 중국에서 수면은 움직이는 노동자에게는 금전적인 손실이다. 초현실적이면서 한편으로 극단적으로 현실에 다를 바 없는 꿈을 통해 작가는 이 시대의 피로와 불안의 요소들을 포착하려고 시도한다.
An exhausted delivery rider sprawled on the bench of a roadside park and fell asleep safe and sound. In the dream composed of a long take, laborers gathered together in a Shanzhai park in the desert where dynamic riders became static “statues,” forming a contrast with the speed and efficiency they pursued inexhaustibly around the clock. The all-star lineup of contemporary laborers revealed the other side of Chinese economic miracles: an increasingly homogeneous urban life infused with technology and capital as well as new kinds of labor and social exploitation — perpetual mobility with speed and labor without rest. In 24/7 by Jonathan Crary, sleep was described as something rarely available in the contemporary capitalist society. And in China, at the forefront of global capitalism, sleep has become a costly risk for these mobile people. In surreal and extremely realistic dreams, the artist made an attempt to capture the elements of fatigue and anxiety in this era — ceaseless mobility day-to-day is frozen in the virtual world, while unremembered faces in real life deserve close-ups in imaginary dreams.

정 위안은 베이징에 근거지를 두고 활동 중이다. 그의 작품은 현대 문화와 역사, 기술의 상태를 체화하고 있는 이미지에 기반한  표상들에 대해 질문을 던진다. 그의 작품들은 타이페이, 청두, 뒤셀도르프, 광저우, 베이징 등지에서 전시된 바 있다. 또한 그의 영화작품은 오버하우젠 국제단편영화제(2019), 앤아버 영화제(2017) 등지에서 상영된 바 있다. 2016년에는 뉴욕에서 레지던시 작가로 체류했다. 그는 2015년 시카고 예술 대학에서 필름, 비디오, 뉴 미디어 전공 제작석사학위를 받았다.
Yuan Zheng lives and works in Beijing. His works address the question about image-based representation that embodies the state of contemporary culture, history and technology. In 2018, he participated in group shows “OFFLINE BROWSER - Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition” at Hong-Gah Museum, Taipei; “Cosmopolis #1.5: Enlarged Intelligence”, Chengdu; “New Metallurgists” at Julia Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf; and “Long March Project: Building Code Violations - Special Economic Zone” at Times Museum, Guangzhou. In 2017, his project Up in the Air is solely exhibited at Taikang Space, Beijing. His works are also screened at film festival including the 65th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2019), 55th Ann Arbor Film Festival (2017), and European Media Art Festival (2016). In 2016, he stayed in New York as a resident artist at PRACTICE. He received his MFA in Film, Video, New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015.
