Description

The filmmaker and his younger brother filmed a wadi they describe as “windless” for being too quiet. With archives of footage and audio conversations, it recreates a lonely character contemplating to the deep muffled voices of the unseen real people; stillness of rocks to the unmoving conflict. The dialogues within the wordless exposé tackle traumatic memories as they become urgent stories relevant to both the past and the present.

영화 제작자와 그의 남동생은 너무 조용하다는 이유로 "무풍"이라고 묘사하는 와디(wadi)를 촬영했다. 영상 자료와 오디오 대화 기록을 이용해서, 이 작품은 보이지 않는 실제 사람들의 깊은 소리에 맞서고 있는 고독한 캐릭터를 재현한다. 바위의 고요함은 움직이지 않는 갈등을 상징한다. 말 없이 노출되는 대화는 과거와 현재 모두에게 관련이 있는 시급한 이야기로써 고통스러운 기억들을 다루고 있다.

Bio

EJ Gagui, (1999, Philippines) is an independent Filipino-Kapampangan filmmaker based in Pampanga, Philippines. He studied filmmaking at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, specializing in documentary production. His visual practice combines fiction and documentary in narrating the everyday miracles, revelations, history, and crises within his hometown. He co-founded a regional-based mini film company, Eximious Produkt, to support and provide a creative space for regional and non-Tagalog artist-filmmakers like him. His first short film, “Ing Tianak,” was selected as a finalist of Film Development Council of the Philippines' Mit Out Sound 2021, a government initiative to revive silent cinema in contemporary times. His second short film, “Rock in a Windless Wadi,” premiered at the Opening Scenes competition at Visions du Réel 2022, won Special Mentions in Gawad Alternatibo and SeaShorts Film Festival, and got nominated in the documentary short category at Pinoy Rebyu Awards by Society of Filipino Film Reviewers. In 2023, he became a funding recipient of Tech Tales Youth by Engage Media to work on a documentary short about digital rights. His medium-length film, “Kamumulan kapupus ning pangamate ampon ding anggang milabas” is currently in post-production.

에즈 가구이(EJ Gagui, 1999년, 필리핀)는 필리핀 카팜팡간 출신의 독립 영화감독으로 필리핀 팜팡가에 거주하고 있다. 그는 데 라 살-세인트 베닐드 대학교(De La Salle-College)에서 영화 제작을 전공하였으며, 다큐멘터리 제작에 집중해서 공부했다. 그의 시각적 작업은 픽션과 다큐멘터리를 결합하여 고향에서 일어나는 일상의 기적, 계시, 역사, 위기를 이야기한다. 그는 지역을 중심으로 한 소규모 영화 제작 회사인 Eximious Produkt를 공동 창립하여 그와 같은 지역 및 타갈로그어 이외의 예술가-영화감독들을 지원하고 창의적인 공간을 제공하고 있다. 그의 첫 번째 단편 영화인 "잉 티아낙"( Ing Tianak)은 현대 무성 영화를 되살리기 위한 정부 이니셔티브인 필리핀 영화 개발 위원회의 "미트 아웃 사운드 2021"( Mit Out Sound 2021)의 최종 후보작으로 선정되었다. 그의 두 번째 단편영화인 "바람이 없는 와디에서의 록(Rock in a Windless Wadi)"는 2022년 Visions du Réel의 오프닝 씬 경쟁부문에서 세계 최초 상영되었으며, Gawad Alternatibo와 SeaShorts 영화제에서 특별 언급을 받았고, Society of Filipino Film Reviewers가 주관하는 Pinoy Rebyu Awards에서 다큐멘터리 단편 부문에 노미네이트되었다. 2023년에는 Engage Media의 "Tech Tales Youth"에서 디지털 권리에 관한 다큐멘터리 단편 작업을 위한 자금 지원을 받았다. 그의 중편영화 "Kamumulan kapupus ning pangamate ampon ding anggang milabas"는 현재 후반작업 중에 있다.
