Description

현존하는 가장 오래된 식물 표본집 중 하나라고 여겨지는 엔 티비 식물 표본집 En Tibi herbarium의 표지에는 라틴어로 ‘여기 당신을 위한, 영원한 꽃들이 미소 짓는 정원이 있다’는 문장이 새겨져 있다. 미소 짓는 정원이란 어떤 곳일까? 이곳의 꽃들은 어떻게 영원할 수 있는 것일까? 그리고 그런 곳을 헌정 받은 당신은 누구인가? 이런 질문을 떠올리게 하는 신비로운 문장과 달리, 우리는 이 표본집에서 16세기의 식물 연구에 대한 분류학적 관심을 엿볼 수 있다.
이성과 진보에 대한 신화적이고 계몽주의적인 이야기들이 지금 여기에서 새롭게 발아된다면 어떤 이야기들이 자랄 수 있을까? 우리의감각밖으로추방된곳에얽혀있는유령같은존재들의 이야기를우리는어떻게발굴하고다시쓸수있을까?이를위해 역사의 잔해를 헤집고 들어가 시간을 뒤틀어 마치 식물학자처럼 산책하며 이야기를 수집하고 정교하게 연결한다. 이를 통해 그동안 숨겨져 왔던 이야기들이 사라지지 않고, 바다-변화를 겪으며, 다시 귀하고 기이한 우리의 이야기가 된다.

The cover of the En Tibi Herbarium, believed to be one of the oldest existing herbaria, is inscribed with the Latin phrase En tibi perpetuis ridentem floribus hortum (Here for you a smiling garden of everlasting flowers). What does a smiling garden look like? How can the flowers be eternal here? And who are you to have such a place dedicated to you? In contrast to the mystical inscription that evokes these questions, we can see in this specimen a taxonomic interest in the study of plants in the 16th century.
If the mythical stories of Enlightenment, of reason and progress, germinate in a different relationship, what new tales might sprout? How can we excavate and rewrite the stories of ghostly beings, intertwined in places banished from our senses? To do this, we sift through the debris of history, scrupulously collecting and connecting stories, while distorting the time like a botanist on the asphalt, as dislocated botanists, twisting the time of a smiling garden into a stroll to reminisce – to embrace repressed, estranged kinship.

Bio

임고은은 서울과 암스테르담에서 영상 작가로 활동하고 있다. 그동안 영화를 둘러싼 시선의 주체와 객체, 과거와 현재, 진실과 허구의 변증법적인 관계를 엮어 경계를 유연하게 넘나드는 가능성을 탐구하는 작업을 해왔다. 여러 영화제와 전시를 통해 활동해 왔으며, 오버하우젠 국제 단편영화제, 서울 국제 실험영화 페스티벌, 유럽 미디어 아트페스티벌, 국립현대미술관 서울관, 아르코미술관, 옵/신 페스티벌 등에서 작품을 상영 및 전시한 바 있다. 최근에는 야생을 회복하기 위한 시적인 언어를 어떻게 찾을 수 있을지에 대해 몰두하고 있다.

Go-Eun Im is a filmmaker and visual artist who works with various media, such as analogue/digital film, photography, and found objects. In her work, she creates transitional memories with porous relationships between moving images and literature. More recently, she has focused on how to find a correlated language for bewilderment in the midst of ecological crises. Her work has been shown among others at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, the Kunstraum Dusseldorf, South African National Gallery in Cape Town, Museum Casino Luxembourg, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and Ob/Scene Festival in Seoul and so on.
