파리 익스페리멘탈 Paris Expérimental 1983~2019

파리 익스페리멘탈 에디션은 실험영화와 아방-가르드 시네마 관련 서적을 출판하기위해 1983년 11월 15일 파리에서 지오반나 푸지오니, 크리스티앙 르브라 그리고 프로스페르 일레레 이렇게 3명에 의해 시작되었다. 파리 익스페리멘탈은 다른 르-부아, 라이트콘 과 같은 다른 출판과 배급 단체와 함께 VHS, DVD 박스세트를 공동으로 출판하거나, 여러 이벤트를 조직하기도 했으며 현재 크리스티앙 르브라가 대표를 하고 있다.
크리스티앙 르브라와 지오반나 푸지오니는 영화감독이며, 프로페르 일레레는 영화 역사가인데 이들은 1974년 실험영화작가조합으로 설립된 파리 필름 조합에 소속되어 있었다. 당시 프랑스에서 실험영화는 잘 알려지지 않았으며, 좀 처럼 소개될 기회조차 갖기 힘들었으며 제도적으로는 완전히 잊혀진 것이나 다름없었다. 크리스티앙 르브라가 파리 익스페리멘탈 에디션을 시작하고자 했던 이유는 70년대와 80년대사이 실험영화 출판의 간극을 채우고, 예술가들과 이러한 영화의 형식에 대한 열정을 공유하고자 했다.
파리 익스페리멘탈은 1985년 12월 퐁피두 센터에서 열린 회고전과 함께 출간한 <1923-1983 아방가르드 시네마로 본 파리>의 카탈로그를 출간했다. 당시 전시는 국제적 아방가르드 시네마와 파리의 관계를 다룬 전시로, 60여년간의 영화를 통해 파리를 단일한 주제로서 일관되게 보여주었다. 카탈로그는 프랑스와 유럽에서 큰 성공을 거두었으며, 이를 기반으로 출판의 지속적인 운영이 가능했다.
두 번째 출판은 오스트리아 실험영화감독인 피터 쿠벨카에 관한 책으로, 크리스티앙 르브라가 구상한 이 시리즈는 중요한 예술가의 모노그라프와 글을 다루는 “아방가르드 클래식"의 시작이기도 했다. 1997년 부터는 동시대 작가 혹은 영화감독의 글을 모아 출간하는 “시네콰논” 컬렉션을 시작했으며, 1998년 부터 2005년까지 파리 익스페리멘탈은 필레 두 칼바이예 갤러에서 시네콰논의 날을 개최하여, 예술가와 비평가 연구자가 참여해 다양한 주제에 관해 미팅을 진행했다. 이어 아이들의 학교 공책에서 영감을 받은 형식의 새로운 컬렉션인 “카이예 뒤 파리 익스페리멘탈"을 시작했으며, 2006년 부터는 “예술가의 삶" 컬렉션을 시작했다. 2015년 파리 익스페리멘탈은 퐁피두 센터에서 30주년을 기념해 다양한 행사를 개최했다.
Paris Expérimental editions were created the 15th of November 1983 in Paris by Giovanna Puggioni, Christian Lebrat and Prosper Hillairet who were aiming to publish reference works of experimental and avant-garde cinema. Paris Expérimental has also organized several events and co-edit boxes sets of VHS and DVD with the video editions Re:Voir Vidéo and Light Cone distributor. Paris Expérimental chairman is Christian Lebrat.
Giovanna Puggioni and Christian Lebrat, film makers and Prosper Hillairet, cinema historian, were affiliated to the Paris Films Coop in the 70’s, an experimental film makers cooperative founded in 1974. The experimental cinema was still a marginal, only represented in rare events and largely ignored by the institutional world in France. Christian Lebrat willing for Paris Expérimental editions was, firstly to fill the gap of experimental film publications in France between the 70’s and 80’s and secondly to share is enthusiasm for this cinema form and some of its artists.
Paris Expérimental was founded to set the retrospective “Paris vu par le cinéma d'avant-garde (1923-1983)” up, received by the Centre Pompidou in 19854. At that time Paris Expérimental publish autonomously the catalogue for that retrospective. The success of the catalogue in France and in Europe allowed the refund of the investment and permitted to remain the association.
The second work published in 1990 by Paris Expérimental was about Peter Kubelka, austrian film director. Conceived and made by Christian Lebrat, it initiates the collection
“Classiques de l'avant-garde” dedicated to founding texts and major artists monographs. From 1997, the “Siné Qua Non” collection begins, conceived as collections of texts from contemporary authors (writers or film makers). From 1998 until 2005, Paris Expérimental organize the Ciné Qua Non days at the Les Filles du Calvaire gallery, meetings on diverse subjects where researchers, critics and artists take part. A new collection the “Cahiers de Paris Expérimental” appears, in which the format is inspired by school child notebooks, then in 2006 the “Livres d'Artistes” collection starts. Paris Expérimental celebrate its 30 years in 2015 at Centre Pompidou, organizing projections, meetings and interventions.
